June 15–19, 2009 – New Schools Application

We will be holding a weeklong core faculty training in June 2009 in New Haven. The program will begin on Monday, June 15th at 8:00 a.m. and end on Friday, June 19th at 12 noon. All veterinary schools are invited to identify faculty to participate in the program. For schools who have not previously participated in the Project, downloaded applications are available (New Schools Application). For returning schools who are interested in sending additional faculty members, downloaded applications are available (Returning Schools Application). The deadline is December 12, 2008.

2008 – Core Training & Symposium

September 2008 - Faculty Symposium in Kansas City
This 1 & 1/2 day symposium was held in Overland Park, KS and provided faculty training on updated content, facilitation and educational materials for Module 5 (Enhancing Adherence) and Module 12 (Healthcare Team Communication). In addition, a training session covering strategies for assessing communication skills was presented by Dr. Cindy Adams and Dr. Kenton Hecker from U of Calgary. The Symposium also featured a dynamic faculty forum for sharing and exchanging curriculum design, teaching strategies and assessment. Our 2008 Symposium was attended by 45 faculty representing 19 schools of veterinary medicine.

August, 2008 - Core Training, Michigan State University
For the second year in a row, an onsite faculty development program was offered for Michigan State University College of Veterinary Medicine faculty. The 18 participants included veterinarians, licensed veterinary technicians, adjunct faculty members in private practice, and support staff who are not directly linked to instruction, yet are influential through their interactions with students and/or clients. The weeklong onsite program was held at MSU's Learning and Assessment Center which houses 20 examination rooms where learners practiced communication and technical skills using simulated clients. By August 2008, 38 Michigan State University CVM faculty and staff have participated in the Bayer Animal Health Communication Project weeklong training program.

June, 2008 - Core Training
This weeklong core training was held in June 2008 and hosted by Michigan State University and was attended by faculty members from fifteen schools of veterinary Medicine in North America and Australia: Auburn University, Purdue University, Washington State University, Texas A & M, University of Tennessee, University of Montreal, Mississippi State University, Ohio State University, Ontario Veterinary College; Texas A & M University, Tuskegee University, University of California Davis, University of Georgia, University of Minnesota and University of Sydney. In addition, representatives from AVMA Professional Liability Insurance Trust and Animal Medical Center in NYC participated in the training.

2007 – Core Training & Symposium

August, 2007 - Core Training, Michigan State University
Upon request, the faculty development program is available to those schools of veterinary medicine onsite who are interested in providing training to a critical mass of faculty. Michigan State University was the first school to lead this effort in onsite faculty development using their state-of-the-art Learning Assessment Center. The weeklong onsite program was held in August 2007 where 16 faculty including 5 veterinary technicians were trained and provided with communication modules and resources for integration into MSU CVM curriculum.

July, 2007 - Faculty Forum, Washington DC
We held a faculty training forum for our 2003-2007 faculty cohort and guest in Washington, DC at the 2007 International Conference on Communication in Veterinary Medicine. This session featured presentation of our updated and revised Module 7: Eye of the Beholder: Addressing Conflict with Clients. This module raises learners awareness of the range of client situations perceived as difficult using a series of videotaped client situations and a user-friendly skill-based model to help difficult relationships be successful for practice.

This weeklong core training was held in June 2007 and was attended by faculty members from nine schools of veterinary Medicine: Purdue University, Washington State University, Texas A & M, University of Pennsylvania, University of Montreal, Oregon State University, Ohio State University, University of Illinois, and University of Missouri.

April, 2007 - Faculty Symposium in KC
This two-day symposium was held in Kansas City, MO and provided faculty development on content, design and elicited feedback for facilitating modules 11 (Breaking the Silence: Disclosing Medical Errors) & 12 (Easy for you to Say: Healthcare Team Communication). In addition, training sessions included strategies for teaching core skills of open-ended inquiry, reflective listening and empathy.

2006 – Core Training & Symposium

Core Training
This weeklong core training was held in June 2006 and was attended by faculty members from nine schools of veterinary Medicine: University Wisconsin, Washington State University, Texas A & M, University of Saskatchewan, University of Georgia, University of Pennsylvania, Louisiana State University, Tufts University, and University of Missouri. 

Symposium
This two-day symposium was held in Las Vegas and provided faculty development on content, design and instructional methods for facilitating modules 9 (Sharing Bad News with Clients) & 10 (Client discussions and ethical dilemmas). In addition, training sessions included innovative strategies for teaching the core skill of empathy and working group sessions on methods for integrating communication modules into core and elective courses in the veterinary curriculum. 2005 – Core Training & Symposium

Core Training
This weeklong core training was held in June 2005 and was attended by faculty members from nine schools of veterinary Medicine: North Carolina State University, Virginia-Maryland Regional College of Veterinary Medicine, University of California, Davis, University of Tennessee, Washington State University, Atlantic Veterinary College at University of Prince Edward Island, Kansas State University, Oklahoma State University, and University of Florida.

Symposium
This two-day symposium was held in Las Vegas and provided faculty development on content, design and instructional methods for facilitating modules 5 (Enhancing Client Adherence), 6 (Nonverbal Communication), 7 (Difficult Veterinarian-Client Interactions), & 8 (Talking with Clients about Money). In addition, training sessions included design, development and logistical training necessary for setting up a simulated client program in veterinary schools.
