Abood, Sarah, DVM, PhD, Assistant Professor - Cohort 2003
Dr. Sarah Abood received her Bachelor of Science degree (1984) and Doctor of Veterinary Medicine degree (1988) from Michigan State University. After completing a one-year internship in large animal medicine and surgery at the University of Minnesota, she spent 5 years at The Ohio State University, working on a PhD and in a clinical nutrition residency with Dr. Tony Buffington. From 1994 to 1999, she worked as a nutrition scientist in Research & Technical Communications at the Ralston Purina Company. Since October 1999, Dr. Abood has been at Michigan State University where she serves as the Assistant Dean for Student Programs and as the small animal clinical nutritionist in the Veterinary Teaching Hospital. Dr. Abood’s research and teaching interests include dietary adherence through client communications, enteral and parenteral nutrition support for small animal patients, obesity prevention and management, veterinary ethical and welfare issues, as well as business skills and professional development. She is the team leader for a first year course in comparative life stage nutrition and a separate course in veterinary ethics. She also runs an elective clerkship for juniors and seniors in applied small animal nutrition. Additionally, she provides nutritional consultations for patients and clients of the small animal teaching hospital. Dr. Abood has co-authored several articles in peer-reviewed journals as well as book chapters and the Manual of Veterinary Dietetics.
