Bateman, Shane, DVM, DVSc, Diplomate ACVECC, Associate Professor-Clinical Emergency/Critical Care Medicine - Cohort 2003
Shane Bateman graduated from the Western College of Veterinary Medicine (University of Saskatchewan) in 1991. Following graduation, Shane participated in rural mixed animal practices in Nova Scotia, Alberta and Saskatchewan where he learned firsthand the importance of effective client communication skills and felt the inadequacy of his training in this important aspect of practice. Shane then was accepted to complete a rotating internship in small animal medicine and surgery at the Ontario Veterinary College (University of Guelph) and subsequently completed a residency (and associated Doctorate in Veterinary Science degree) in small animal emergency/critical care medicine at the same institution. Shane obtained diplomate status in the American College of Veterinary Emergency and Critical Care in 1998.
Following completion of his residency, Shane accepted a faculty position at The Ohio State University's College of Veterinary Medicine where he has remained since. In addition to fostering the development of the emergency/critical care program at OSU, Shane took an active interest in teaching communication skills to veterinary students. The opportunity to participate in the inaugural Bayer Animal Health Communication Project Faculty Training (in 2003) was a turning point for Shane. Since completing the training, Shane has worked closely with other faculty at Ohio State to bring communication skills training into the curriculum for both students and houseofficers at the college. In his role as section head of the Small Animal Care & Wellness section, Shane has worked hard to ensure that communication skills training is woven throughout the teaching and training that occur within the section.
