Christenson, Dawn, LVT - Cohort 2008

Michigan State University

person

I graduated from the Veterinary Technology Program at Michigan State University in 1979. On graduation, I accepted a position as an LVT in a small animal practice in Charlotte, Michigan. I worked in this practice full time, until 1981, when a half time position opened with the Veterinary Technology Program. From 1981 to 1983 I worked half time in practice and half time with the Program.

My original position with the Program was as the Clinical Coordinator. In this capacity, my principal responsibility was the oversight of all technician students during their clinical training within the Veterinary Teaching Hospital. I also taught in didactic laboratories. In the late 1980s, it became necessary for me to take on a more intensive role in the classroom. Over the years, my classroom responsibilities have covered a wide array of topics, from anatomy and physiology to nursing care principles. Currently, my subject areas include medical terminology, surgical nursing, companion animal dentistry, clinical pathology, parasitology and practice management. I have also recently published the second edition of Veterinary Medical Terminology with Saunders.

Aside from my love of education, I enjoy a number of things in my spare time. Wood working, especially scroll-work, is a passion. Actually, anything that requires power tools is pure enjoyment for me. I also spend time volunteering for Eaton Community Hospice, providing patient care at our local hospice house. I am very active in my church, particularly singing and ringing handbells.
