Dr. Raphael is a 1995 graduate of The University of Sydney, Australia. He joined a mixed practice for 3 years in the Atherton Tablelands, Australia, then completed a Production Medicine Residency/MS degree at Michigan State University where he stayed on as faculty in 2001. His clinical appointment is in dairy medicine and surgery. Dr. Raphael has worked with producers and students on a number of large mid-Michigan dairies – for the last 3 years entirely at Green Meadow Farms, Elsie, MI, home of Michigan State University’s Training Center for Dairy Professionals.
Dr. Raphael moderates and teaches MSU’s two food animal medicine and surgery courses, and assists in teaching a variety of other production animal courses in the Colleges of Veterinary Medicine, and Agriculture and Natural Resources. His research interests are in several of areas of dairy management and health, including postpartum anestrus, animal behavior, infectious diseases, and application of metabolic profiles in milk ingredients. He also is interested in validation of tools used to assess students in clinical settings.
Dr. Raphael has found the 2007 in-house training at Michigan State University to be most valuable in his interactions with producers and senior veterinary students, and has found the material to be well received and useful to students.
